A/S Art, Craft and Design students were treated to a collage workshop run by Helen Hallows. Helen is a mixed media artist /designer from Nottingham who specialises in experimenting with different media and stitch. Her work is published as cards and limited edition prints, and sold in galleries across the UK. Her work focuses on colour and the landscape so when we asked her to look at colour in the project titled ‘Markets’ she was very enthusiastic. Over eighty students attended the workshops during the two days. They all produced exciting colour backgrounds to work on and began to be more aware of mixing different materials and introducing stitch onto paper.

The students readily experimented and produced work that can be developed. Many tried new techniques and the sewing machines were very busy for the two days. Students enjoyed hearing about her work and seeing it displayed; they were particularly interested to hear that she has a studio at the bottom of her garden, which made them all realise that there are careers in art and design.
