Bees are vital to the health of our environment. Nearly one-third of our food relies on bees for pollination, including fruits, vegetables, and nuts. However, bee populations are under threat due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. By keeping bees, we directly contribute to local biodiversity and help combat the declining bee population. Bees on campus support the pollination of nearby flowers, plants, and trees, promoting a richer, more diverse local ecosystem.

The College’s apiary aligns with global sustainability efforts by fostering a small but significant solution to a major environmental challenge. At Loreto, sustainability isn’t just a theoretical idea discussed in the classroom—it’s a lived experience, visible through the bees that call our Ellis and Kennedy building balcony home and the ecological initiatives they support.

Hands-On Educational Opportunities

One of the greatest benefits of keeping bees at Loreto College is the opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning. Whatever courses they study, students have a unique resource right on campus to observe the complex life cycle of bees and their intricate social structures.

As they engage with the bees, students explore concepts such as pollination, hive behaviour, and honey production—lessons that can’t be fully grasped through textbooks alone. Loreto College maintains an apiary to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing our planet today.
