Loreto’s Law Department has been participating in a mooting competition with the University of Law. Mooting is the skill of making a legal argument on a point of law in front of a judge.

An internal heat was held at Loreto, presided over by barrister Sara Davie, and two of our pairs were selected to progress to the final, which took place at the University of Law’s Manchester campus in March, and featured the winners of heats at Aquinas College, Bolton Sixth Form College, and Cheadle Hulme High School.

The final took place under the watchful eye of Barrister Nick Stanage, who was more than happy to interrupt the advocacy of our students! Niamh O’Shaughnessy, Keira Golds, Alice Odubiyi and Mohamed Kone represented Loreto.

Head of Law, Mr Howells, is delighted to report that Niamh and Keira were crowned champions and have won a mini-pupillage at leading Human Rights set Doughty Street Chambers (whose members include Amal Clooney and Keir Starmer) as well as a humungous trophy! Niamh O’Shaughnessy also won the individual prize for the outstanding advocate on the night. The judge was extremely complimentary about the advocacy skills of our students.  Niamh, Keira, Alice and Mohamed did the College proud!
