The netball team hosted Cardinal Newman second team in the third round of the AoC National Cup on Wednesday afternoon. After a hectic week scheduling this fixture in, the team won convincingly.
Loreto controlled the game from the offset, a strong start meant that Newman struggled to find their form and only scored two goals. Loreto were unfaltering all over the court, showing speed and flare in attack and determination and grit in defence. The ever formidable defence of Giselle Yeboah, Jasmine McAvoy and Isabelle Tyler was exceptional and provided their attackers with plenty of opportunities. Grace McAvoy once again controlled the midcourt and the attacking line up of Kemi Onasanya, Freya Coggins and Emily Brocklebank was impeccable. The first quarter finished 8-2 to Loreto.
Quarter two saw Lydia Forster enter the game at WA; her performance was flawless and she used her speed and creativity to light up the attack, earning herself Coach’s ‘Player of the Match’. Loreto were still in full control and won the second quarter 11-3.
Heading into the third quarter, more changes were made to ensure that all players took to the court. Daisy Shea came on at WD, Kemi Onasanya came back on at GA and Grace O’Shaunessy came on at GS. Although Loreto made numerous changes, this did not affect their momentum and they won this quarter 6-2. Daisy Shea was excellent at WD, making numerous interceptions and driving the ball through court – she was voted as players’ ‘Player of the Match’.
The fourth and final quarter saw more changes. Kemi Onasanya moved to C and Freya Coggins and Emily Brocklebank came back on at GA and GS respectively. Again, these changes did not affect Loreto’s strong lead and they continued their fine form. Loreto won the final quarter 9-2.
The final score finished: Loreto 34 – 9 Cardinal Newman.
