Each year, Loreto College celebrates the life of Mary Ward – the founder of our college, alongside the seven values that underpinned her life: Excellence, Freedom, Internationality, Joy, Justice, Sincerity and Truth. Usually the students are given a day off timetable to engage in an activity (inspired by one of the seven values) that they have picked from a wide list of activities organised by the College. For all the obvious reasons, the College had to do things differently this year, so lunchtime events were held for the students and staff during the week before half term. There were quizzes, raffles and sports competitions, along with freebies and giveaways. During one lunchtime, hotdog stands were set up on campus, giving out free hotdogs – traditional, vegetarian or Halal – to anyone who wanted one, or two!
It seems particularly appropriate, as society takes tentative steps to open up again after the easing of pandemic restrictions, that Freedom is the chosen value this year. Freedom badges were given out throughout Mary Ward Week and it was great to see them worn prominently by both students and staff on their college lanyards.
